Three steps to reaching your fitness and wellness goals in 2020
By Ben Bernabe January 6, 2020 Every new year, we are given an opportunity to reflect and set new year’s resolutions to help us create a better version of ourselves. Almost every person’s new year’s resolutions list would include an item or two about fitness and wellness. Whether it’s about eating better, going to the gym regularly, or starting a new fitness routine, it almost always involves doing something bigger, better, and more challenging. It’s easy to set big, hairy, and audacious goals in our heads, especially after finishing off a very heavy media noche meal with some wine. But sometimes goals just stay in our mind because they are so big that we don’t know where to start. So here are three steps to help you reach those fitness and wellness goals this 2020. Let go of the past The first thing that you have to do is to let go of your fitness past, especially if that past is holding you back. Our past performance on its own is not an indicator of our future success in our new fitness and wellness endeavors in 2020. Sometimes we obsess too much on our past failings that we end up identifying as failures but we have to remember that our actions solely do not define us as persons. Success can also get into our heads and get in the way of our own personal progress. There is such a thing as plateauing event for elite athletes and it is important to always challenge ourselves. Maybe you had a goal in 2019 and you reached it - you have to remember that the goal is merely a part of the practice. So even if you nailed your arm balances or you’ve reached your ideal weight last year, it doesn’t mean that you will stop. You need to think of new ways to challenge yourself in 2020. Make it S.M.A.R.T. We see it and hear it often in corporate settings but it also pays to be S.M.A.R.T. with your fitness goals - that is making them specific, measurable, attainable, realistic, and time-bound. A specific goal like “I want to lose 10 kgs.” is more likely to be achieved than a general goal of “I want to lose weight." Similarly, simply saying “I will go to the gym” does not have the same measurable conviction as “I will go to the gym three times a week.” Make sure that your goal is attainable and realistic, considering everything in the process like your time, resources, fitness level, and physical ability. For example, it certainly is not realistic to run a marathon right away when you haven’t even finished a 5K fun run. Finally, in all things, time is our friend. Making our goals time-bound gives us that added pressure of pushing towards our goals. But we also have to have a healthy attitude towards the fitness deadlines we set. We should make our goals attainable and doable but we should also set the bar high enough so that even if we don’t reach it, we’d have created miles of progress that can fuel us and inspire us in our fitness and wellness journey. Find your tribe It takes a village to raise a well-rounded and fit individual. You need to find a community that shares your passion and vision for yourself - a group of people that will support you in reaching your goals. Sometimes, beyond words of encouragement or praise, it is the collective energy that you share with these people that will keep you pushing forward. You want to find an activity that fosters this kind of energy and this kind community so that you can fully commit yourself to it. Going through a fitness journey can be tough and challenging and you don’t want to feel like you are all on your own. Sometimes, you will need your friends in the community to push you to get up because there will be days when you don’t feel like sticking to your plans. Start the year right If you’re just getting started on a fitness journey or if you’re planning to get back on it this year, Beyond is offering you a fun challenge. Do something that works for you The most important element for success in reaching your fitness and wellness goals is finding something that you enjoy, that works for you, and that you can commit to. It can be yoga and the stillness that it offers, it can be dance, walking, or running. Whatever it may be, as long as you’re moving, then you’re on your way to a fitter, better, and healthier version of yourself. Namaste!
